Contest Day 7 = Lissa Matthews, Pink Buttercream Frosting

Today I’d like you to welcome Lissa Matthews to the stage.  I’ll be posting an unedited excerpt for her book Pink Buttercream Frosting, due out in October. =)

1. How did you get started with your writing?

My girlfriends and I used to write serial romance stories when we were in Jr. High and High School. I always loved to write and had a college professor tell me once that I should take up creative writing and years later I finally decided to try it…
2. What/who is your biggest muse?

No answer for this really. I find inspiration in all sorts of places, but don’t really have a muse. I think they’re still processing my request for one…laughs.
3. Is there a character in one of your books you connect with the most?

I connect with Rose in my first book, Educating Rose and I connect with my character Bailey in my upcoming Samhain release, Pink Buttercream Frosting. A lot of my female characters have a lot of my characteristics in one way or another. I can’t write them any other way.
4. What do you like to do in your free time other than write?

I read. A lot. I cook and bake. A lot. I am a big Nascar fan and love to watch college football and golf. Charlotte has these greenways for walking all over the city and I love getting out and doing that, spending time with friends, taking naps, crochet.
5. What are some of your favorite books?Any genre or author.

The Incognito series at Cobblestone Press. I read a lot of BDSM and M/M. I have found that I enjoy Ava March and M.L. Rhodes a great deal. Lorelei James as well.

6. Where is your writing sanctuary?

It used to be the coffee shop down the street, but business picked up and now you can’t find a seat. I don’t really have one anymore. I like to write with my mp3 player and headphones and can’t really do it with the television on, so I try to lock myself in my bedroom or in a corner. When it’s nice out in the summer and fall, I’ll go out onto the deck at night and turn on the garden lights and write. For me, anywhere I can feel free to create is my sanctuary.
7. How did you celebrate “selling” your first book?

I cried and couldn’t believe it. It was my first submission anywhere and that was just amazing to me. A friend of mine and I went out to lunch and had amazing cheesecake, then I got to writing again.
8. What is your favorite thing about Samhain?

That they bought my book…laughs. The support has been great and the people there have been very open and willing to work with you, answer any questions you have. Since my book hasn’t been released yet, I don’t have much to go on, but I am looking forward to a long relationship with Samhain.
9. Is there something you would like to see more of in RomanceLandia?

More originality in characters and places. I would like to see female characters that are a bit more believable, real. I would like to see more erotic historicals. I love historical romance and would love some more erotic historical, ala Susan Johnson style.
10. Tell us about your editor.

Tera is…well, she’s fabulous! She contracted my book! She’s been very patient, very open about how Samhain works. She’s been helpful with my questions and I am looking forward to working with her.

Excerpt/ Chapter One

Robert let out a low whistle. “Check out the rack on that one! She’s one piece I wouldn’t mind getting to know.”

“You have got to be the most sexist asshole.”

“And you’ve been boring as shit for months.”

“Sorry. Not interested.”

Silence fell between the two friends and colleagues. The waitress brought the check as well as a couple of fresh drinks telling the men that there was no rush, eyeing both appreciatively and earning a wink from Robert.

“What about her? She’s not bad in a hand in the cookie jar one too many times kind of way.”

“Jesus, Robert. Could you be any more of a jerk?”

“Well, she’s not all bad. She’s got a pretty nice rack. Probably has a nice tight on the inside ass, too.”

Aidn Greer glanced up with the beer bottle poised at his lips and followed the direction of Robert’s gaze. He took a long swallow as he watched the woman cross the cobbled street of the outdoor shopping area toward the bar and grill he sat inside of. He got a quick look at her before she turned and walked away down the sidewalk and something twitched in his mind. In that brief glance she seemed familiar to him or at least her face seemed familiar, but he was unable to place where he might have seen her.

He had to agree with his friend though. She wasn’t bad at all. Kind of pretty in a cute, wholesome way. Aidn wasn’t into cute and wholesome, though. He wasn’t into curvy either and she definitely had curves, a few extra from the way she filled out her jeans and the form fitting tee shirt. But still, there was something in the way she carried herself; confident and not at all timid about her petite rounded body. The potential was there for an afternoon fuck session if only he could convince her of it. He could just imagine his hands gripping her hips as he thrust into her over and over again.

Damn, I’m not better than Robert. Shaking the thought from his head, he took another long pull of the beer to finish it off and put the bottle down. “No, she’s not.”

“When was the last time you got some?”

Aidn stared at Robert for a moment, trying to find the best way, a different way to explain it. Again. “It’s not about getting some. Shit. If that’s all it was about then there would be pussy in my bed every night.” And he certainly didn’t want to think about how long it had been since a woman had been in his bed.

“Then what? Are you bored? Have you fucked every single woman in town already?”

Robert was attempting humor but Aidn didn’t have the patience for it. Was he bored? Probably. His usual choice of woman was likely part of the problem. He liked variety and he liked singe-the-flesh-from-your-bones hot. But the emptiness was getting to be too much. The lack of connection on even the most basic intellectual levels was driving him nuts. He wanted depth. He wanted a hot and interesting mind to delve into. He wanted someone worth his time, his skill, someone worth his dominance. The truth of that was what was killing him. The need to be in control, to take a woman to the edge of her comfort zone and then push her off  into unimaginable pleasure pulled at his gut until he thought he would be sick from it at times.

Most of the women he came in contact with played at being submissive, played the role in the bedroom. It was so much more than that to him. The hunger to have a girl on her knees at his feet because she needed to be there, because she needed to surrender…God…

He needed to stop thinking about it in personal terms. The likelihood that he would find a girl like that, a girl that he could trust, a girl that he wanted to trust was not likely at all.

And he was suddenly ready to be done with lunch. He wanted to try and find the woman again, see if he could place her. Even though anonymous, afternoon fucks weren’t what he wanted, he couldn’t deny he still wanted to see if she’d be interested.  “No. I haven’t. That’s your aspiration in life.”

Robert grinned at him. “Yes, it is. But, if it’s not just about a piece of ass, what is it? Have you changed your mind about wanting to find a submissive?”

“I don’t understand that either, Aidn. You’ve been in the lifestyle for a long ass time. What happened was years ago and it’s time and past you put it behind you and try again.”

“Years ago. It has been years, but you know why I don’t own, why I only choose to teach and mentor.”

“Yeah, I do. You get to remain detached so you don’t get fucked over again, so you get to remain in control, so you get to remain a cold bastard. Yes, that much I get.”

“Whatever makes you sleep better at night. Look, I’ve got to get back to work. Some of us still have to punch the clock.”

Robert threw some bills on the table to cover the check and stood. Aidn stood as well and followed his friend out the door. The fresh air felt good and he took a deep breath, letting it out slowly.

“You know Aidn, maybe you should go introduce yourself to that woman. It may just be that you need a change for a while.”

“Yeah, maybe.”

  7. Hi Lissa. Love NASCAR too! Odd day without racing today (was on last night) and none next week with mother’s day (don’t they know us mothers love watching on our day!) LOL.

What a great title! How did you come to this title for the book? I didn’t see the blurb so I wondered. Yummy excerpt!

  8. Hi ya’ll! Thanks so much for the comments and the welcome and the encouragement! I can’t wait for this title to come out in October. I’m so not a very patient person…laughs.

Caffey, I came up with the title because there is a lotion called Pink Buttercream Frosting and that’s what inspired this story. I intend to write the company and tell them that…laughs.

    Again, thanks everyone!
